Task 3 / Development & Design

INSTRUCTIONS

Task 3: Development & Design
After the visual analysis, will now create a work of design, based by the idea have proposed in Task 2. expected to apply knowledge of design principles in idea development and final design.
Can use any medium and/or materials, except for full photography, that are suitable to convey your final visual message.

I will choose the first sketch to create the work
Sketch 1
This design retains the tranquility and dreamlike feeling of Monet's original painting. I want to enlarge the main water lily in the center and make it the focus of the whole painting.

Fig 1.1 Sketch 1 (3/3/2025)

I am confused about whether to use watercolor or illustration design, because both are areas I am not good at. Using watercolor can better express the relationship between the water surface.

In terms of color, I will choose red, blue and green to complete this task.

So I cut the A4 size drawing paper into the square shape I wanted. Then I drew the final sketch on the drawing paper.

Fig 1.2 Sketch 1(12/3/2025)

But after asking Mr. Charles, he felt that there was still room for improvement, so I rethought the idea of the sketch and did a good job of proportioning and distributing the water lilies and lotus leaves.

Mr. Charles said, "Now it's more like a composition.“ There are still some details I can enhance. I don't know how to enhance the details or where to add them.

Fig 1.3 Final Sketch(21/3/2025)
For this sketch, I plan to change the lotus leaf into another shape to echo the water lily.

Watercolor Tutorial
I plan to record the drawing process and make a time-lapse video

Process 1
Why do I have two videos? At the beginning, when I finished drawing the water lily, I found that I was not satisfied with it and wanted to give up, so I stopped recording the video. Then I looked at my work and it seemed that I could still save it, so I continued to record the second time-lapse video and continued to complete the rest.

Process 2

Final Outcome
To be honest, I am still a little dissatisfied with my work. There are still some flaws in the details, but after completing it, I feel a sense of accomplishment. I didn’t have much experience in watercolor painting before, and I never thought that I could create such a work.
When I finished I noticed that I seemed to be missing a reflection, no wonder it felt weird.

Fig 1.4 Final Outcome(21/3/2025)

Rationale

I chose to paint water lilies because I like flowers. There are many types of flowers, each with its own unique beauty. So I also chose to create water lilies in my work. In order to create a harmonious and peaceful atmosphere, I also chose watercolor as the medium. I hope that this work expresses a harmonious and calm atmosphere that can stop people's irritability. In the design principle, the lotus on the left side of the picture is the main visual focus, while the lotus leaves on the right side provide a balance so that the picture is not too heavy on one side. The pink water lilies and the blue water surface form a strong color contrast to make the water lilies more prominent. The lotus leaves are similar in shape and color, forming a regular arrangement, making the picture more unified. The lotus on the left side of the picture is the brightest and most delicate focus, which naturally attracts the viewer's attention. The colors are combined in a cold and warm contrast, but the overall harmony is still present, showing a tranquil water scene.
