Week 1
Culture & Design
At the beginning of the first day, Mr. Asrizal briefed us with the precautions and course outline of intercultural design, and then Ms. Noranis's lecture began, and we began to divide into groups. Then my group members included Indonesia and Chinese.
Week 2
CMYKL brief
Our team was confused about what ‘Everyday Design’ was all about. Then, during this week, we came up with the idea of a clip-on cup holder, focusing on portability and functionality, and even incorporating Malaysian culture such as tiger stripes or “batik” patterns. In fact, there were many more ideas at the beginning, including the design of bowls and board game cards. It was also during this week that we learned that our mentor was Mr. Charles.
Week 3
Proposal Q&A session
After the physical class, we asked Mr. Charles about the product we chose and the overall concept. He felt that it was not suitable for us to implement, and it would be difficult to shoot the content for TikTok in the final task. Then we discussed for a long time. It happened that our Powerpoint already had research on Malaysia's mamak, hawker center and night market and other food culture. Mr. Charles suggested that we choose to conduct in-depth research, not necessarily product design, usability, innovation and other relatively difficult. So we gave up the idea of the cup holder and turned to food culture.
Mr. Charles said something that I think makes sense. Many groups feel stressed and confused by the idea of products. But in fact, we think too complicatedly. We should enjoy the process of studying other unfamiliar cultures, which will be more relaxing.

Week 5
This week is the Task 2 due date, after class, we consulted Mr. Charles about Task 2. Mr. Charles asked us what we observed, such as the culture of each restaurant, the attitude of their waiters, the differences in their customer base, etc. Then we revised our PowerPoint content and recorded the presentation video. Our group decided to collect data at these locations
- Hawker Rock Cafe
- Hawker Tang City Food Court
- Kopitiam Chan Ooi Yee Kopitiam
- Kopitiam Kafei Dian
- Mamak Nasi Kandar Ali Bistro
- Mamak Shaaz Curry House
- Warung Blendik/Warung Maju Jaya
- Warung Taylors

No classes, prepare for the final Task
Week 7
Final Project
After we have collected the data, we need to edit these videos together to make TikTok videos and upload them to the platform we created.
My role is to edit part of the video. I happened to learn Adobe Premiere Pro in the video production course last semester, which can be used to edit the video. After continuously determining the video style required by the team members, they wanted a cinematic video.
Here is a part for my edited video

REFLECTION
This intercultural design course has been quite a learning experience to understand how to put together a few cultural elements into doing design as well as adapting to challenges. At the initial stage of our project, our team intended to design a portable cup holder like the Malaysian culture motif, though we have conversed with our lecturer about the possibility of such a direction is not the most appropriate. Therefore, we began to look into the different facets of Malaysia’s food culture. We visited places such as Petaling Street and Sunway so we can gain firsthand insights, observing how the atmosphere and service style are like, as well as demographics for the customers of hawker stalls, Malay restaurants and cafés. This is the field research that made me understand more about Malaysia’s cultural diversity. Finally, we put together our data into a TikTok video, which I somehow improved my video editing skills in the process. During this period, I have learned that design is not only about the creation of products but about understanding and speaking about culture. All these skills are teamwork, field studies, and creative executions that I will take forward to further develop myself on the projects I will be doing in the future.
