INSTRUCTIONS

Final Project: Comic cover and Animated One Page intro
We are to select a story from the short stories of Edgar Allan Poe and we are to create:

1. Comic Cover Page
2. Animated One Page Intro

Animated scope:
1. Parallax (to create depth)
2. Secondary Action
3. Animated Background

After I read Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat I decided to use this story for illustration.

Rationale

"The Black Cat" tells the story of a man who transforms from a gentle cat lover into a violent alcoholic. In a fit of rage, he kills his beloved black cat, leading to a series of mysterious events in his home. He finds a new black cat but becomes terrified and hateful towards it. Eventually, after murdering his wife, he hides her body in the wall. When the police come to investigate, they hear strange noises coming from the wall. Upon tearing it down, they discover the wife's body along with the black cat. This revelation uncovers his crime, and the story concludes with horror and remorse.

Research

I search Edgar Allan Poe's "the black cat" on Google.

This is the layout I'm considering

Rough Sketch
My drawing skills are limited so my sketches look simple, so I probably went online and found some similar pictures. Then I adjust myself to the feeling I want.

Final
This is my final product. I don’t know how long I spent on the illustrations. Of course, animation is also needed in the end.

Timeline
Sketch 1: For the first one I didn't want animation, so I kept the original family photo

Animation

Panel 2: Character Change

Animation Effect: Show the animation of the bottle tilting and the liquid flowing, while the protagonist's expression changes from tired to angry.
Effect Description: Use a GIF or a small animation to display the liquid in the bottle sloshing and the transition of the protagonist's expression.

Panel 3: Abuse of Pluto

Animation Effect: The action of the knife stabbing Pluto's eye, accompanied by Pluto's painful reaction.
Effect Description: Use frame-by-frame animation to show the trajectory of the knife and the gradual process of Pluto's eye being stabbed.

Panel 4: Hanging Pluto
Animation Effect: Dynamic effect of flames burning, with Pluto slightly swinging on the tree.
Effect Description: The dynamic effect of flames can be achieved through flickering flames and rising smoke, and Pluto's slight swing on the tree can be shown with frame-by-frame animation.

Panel 5: The New Black Cat
Animation Effect: After the new black cat appeared, the atmosphere suddenly became weird and the lights continued to flash.
Effect Description: Can use lighting effects to highlight the eerie feeling when a new black cat appears.

Panel 6: Murder and Concealment
Animation Effect: Animation effect of the wall closing, the background darkening, highlighting the tense atmosphere.
Effect Description: Show the wall slowly closing and the light gradually dimming through animation, increasing the tension.

Panel 7: The Revelation
Animation Effect: Vibration effect when the police knock on the wall, with a cat's meow coming from inside the wall.
Effect Description: Show the wall being knocked and the cracks appearing gradually through animation, with the cat's eyes flashing in the crack and a meowing sound.

When I'm done I'll separate these into ppt

Comic cover
I blurred the cat's eyes in the background and added the blood splatter effect.

REFLECTION

Creating illustrations for "The Black Cat" reflects the darkness and guilt within the human soul. The black cat symbolizes sin and fear, while shadows and lighting enhance the eerie atmosphere. The protagonist's expressions and posture show his transformation from a cat lover to a violent murderer. These visual elements vividly convey the story's core themes.
I didn't have any direction at the beginning because this was my first time making this type of illustration. Fortunately, Mr. Hafiz was very enthusiastic to help us, so I was able to complete this assignment. This assignment was quite difficult because we had to fully understand the content of the story and then complete the illustration from a different perspective.
