Task 3 / Type Design and Communication
We need to use three different pens to design our typefaces, So I spent RM11.70 to buy the three pens for this task.

Mr Max: this one looks good can design all the needed alphabets and capital letter then digitize.
Fig 1.4 Sketch 2 (22/6/2024) |
Before digitizing my sketches, I learned how to deconstruct.Mr Max taught us how to deconstruct
letter in class.

In the end I chose this version to digitize the sketch.

In the first version, my T C S H G O all the thickness is not the same.

I fix some places to make it more similar and make the symbol bold like #!
The final product after my adjustments is like this.

Ascender height: 729pt
Cap height: 716pt
X-height: 500pt
Baseline: 0pt
Descender height: -187pt
I named my font "vetroline", vetroline is a combination of English and Italian.
vetro : In Italian, vetro means glass. Glass symbolizes transparency, sophistication and modernity, which matches the elegant and contemporary style of the font.
line : "Line" in English means line. There may be many beautiful lines and geometric elements in the design of the font, and "line" can reflect these design features.
ok fine, actually I asked chatgpt to help me name it.

FEEDBACK
Week 9
General Feedback : Task 3 is more creativity.
Week 10
General Feedback : Everyone has summited Task 2, efficient.
Specific Feedback: You can continue sketching on the font that has been selected.
Week 11
General Feedback: After digitizing the sketch go to D7.04 finish by Fontlab.
Specific Feedback: Some of the strokes the thickness are not entirely same like the hashtag ur vertical rectangular are different size.
Week 12
General Feedback: Make sure to put all the files into the portfolio and complete the poster next week.
REFLECTION
Experience
From this exercise, I came into contact with the new software Fontlab. Compared with the previous exercises, this time I need to be more creative in designing my own fonts. I think the difficult part is from digitizing the sketch to AI. The arcs and thickness of all letters must be the same. Fortunately, with the help of Mr Max, I can successfully complete this assignment.
Observations
At the same time, I also observed that other people’s works are extremely creative, and all the fonts are very consistent and look neat. I would like to communicate more with them if I have the opportunity.
Findings
Finally, I discovered that inventing fonts is not easy. It is a huge project, and it can also be used as an extra income. Before I had this homework, I thought that designing fonts was a very simple job. I didn’t expect that there were so many details that needed to be paid attention to.
FURTHER READINGS
Fig 3.2 pg 134 (15/7/2024) |
Diagonal edges rendered as pixels on a raster-scan display have a jagged stairstep quality, called “the jaggies. When the resolution is lower, there will be more jaggies.
(Fig 9-13) In addition to the large size and bright color of the word chance, the unusual order in which the letters appear gives the word prominence.
In (Fig 9-14), type fading up quickly on the left and right sides of the screen attracts attention because it interrupts the established pace of the animation.

Visual configurations were invented by combining letters from the English alphabet and single-digit numbers (Figs. 11-1 to 11- 4). Scale, proportion, weight, and shape relationships between two different signs were explored.

They select a historical event as a subject and develop a typographic message using the visual properties of type and space to amplify its content (Figs. 11-24 to 11-27). This project develops an understanding of the inventive potential of typographic form. As a message carrier, typography can intensify and expand content and meaning.

Convert diverse information into a three-dimensional cube (Figs. 11-63 to 11-65)
After selecting from the existing Latin letter forms provided, you are then instructed to create a unique symbol that blends visual effects (Figs. 11-66 to 11-68).
